HALSEYS OF
GRAYSON COUNTY VIRGINIA
1780-1880
I believe that there were two Halseys that arrived in Grayson County, Virginia somewhere after
1780. They were William and Moses Halsey. William was born in Columbia, NJ, 1760, and was a
Revolutionary War Soldier. William enlisted in 5/9/1778 and joined on 6/5/1778 at Mt. Holly, NJ.
William served under Capt Emily, was commanded by Gen. Dayton; Served at the Battles of
Brandywine, Bunker Hill; Ash Swamp; and Cowpens. He was one of General Washington's body gaurds
at Morristown, NJ for 3 years. He returned to Columbia, NJ ca 1782 and was married by Rev.
Joseph Gravies at the Presbyterian Chruch.
Moses, born 1761 on Long Island, NY, and William were related through their common
great-great-grandfather Thomas Halsey Jr. from Southampton, Long Island, NY. Both are
descendants of Thomas Halsey I who came to America in 1633.
Below is the best information I have been able to put together concerning the Halsey families
of Grayson County. Any corrections, additions, or deletions are welcomed. This is a work in
progress....
