	* According to Edom Shugart, in a letter written to The Clinton
Register and printed 23 June 1876, this cemetery was first used
when "... during the first winter of our residence in DeWitt
County (1824-25) a man named Nathan Vestal, with a large family of
children, moved into our neighborhood and staid a few day in our
hut. He settled down and built a log cabin nearly on the spot
where James D. Hayes' house now stands. Soon after he moved into
his house his oldest child, a nice little girl about twelve years
old, was taken very sick, and my brother was on the point of going
to Springfield for a doctor when she died... The little girl was
buried on the hill near Emily Hayes' residence, and that was the
beginning of the burying ground where so many of our friends now
	sleep...."
